With the new trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune now hitting the web, it’s a good time to be reminded that the film is spawning a spin-off TV series on HBO Max, one that has a new showrunner in place in the form of Diane Ademu-John.

As the movie follows the grander story of powerful ruling houses clashing over the planet known as Arrakis, the series is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit (of which the film’s Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson, is a key member). Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet, known to its inhabitants as Dune. And of you’re wondering how the timeline works? The series will be a prequel to the film and its planned sequel (fingers crossed on that one).

Jon Spaihts, who co-wrote the film, was originally going to run the show, but he stepped away in 2019 to focus on writing the second film.

Ademu-John has experience with the likes of The Haunting Of Bly Manor, Empire (the show, not us) and The Vampire Diaries.

Dune lands on 22 October, but we’re still waiting to learn when the show might arrive.
