Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels most famously hit the screen courtesy of Edgar Wright‘s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, which became a cult classic even if it didn’t set the box office alight. Now Netflix is looking to muscle in on the action, with O’Malley on board to turn the story into an anime.

O’Malley is working with BenDavid Grabinski to develop the ‘toon take on his six-volume tale, published between 2004 and 2010. For those unfamiliar, it follows the titular Canadian slacker, who plays in a garage band named Sex Bob-omb with his friends. His life is turned upside down when he meets Ramona Flowers, an American girl who is recently single. But before their love can blossom, Pilgrim finds himself challenged by his love’s seven previous relationships, and must defeat them in over-the-top fashion.

Netflix has yet to hand down an actual series order for the show, which means it’ll hinge on the quality of the scripts. And Wright, along with producing partner Nira Park and movie co-writer Michael Bacall will all receive executive producer credits, though they’re not currently directly involved with the series. The film brought a lot of the story’s energy to the screen, but animation obviously offers even more opportunities.
