Though there has been some behind-the-scenes shuffling (more on that in a moment), it appears that Netflix’s animated series adaptation of the Magic: The Gathering card game is rolling onwards. Especially since Brandon Routh has now been cast in one of the lead roles.
The aim of the show is the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold. Routh is on to play Gideon, an unfalteringly heroic Planeswalker.
When it was first announced the creative team included Marvel directing veterans Joe and Anthony Russo plus head writers/show-runners Jose Molina and Henry Gilroy. They’ve all since departed, with the scripts for the first season finished up by Jeff Klein and Steve Meleching.
With a tie-in novel planned, the series should be on Netflix’s servers later this year. For his part Routh, no stranger to genre properties, is a big fan of the game, and seems excited to be part of the show…
