Not content to let sibling Jake have all the fun on Netflix, Maggie Gyllenhaal is making her directorial debut with The Lost Daughter, which stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson and Jessie Buckley. The psychological drama been scooping up awards and praise from festivals and now has a trailer online.

Adapted by Gyllenhaal from Elena Ferrante’s novel, the story finds Leda (Colman) taking a seaside holiday alone. She becomes consumed with a young mother (Johnson) and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood.

An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.

Given the powerhouse central trio (plus the likes of Ed Harris and Peter Sarsgaard in support), it’s not a shock to see why Gyllenhaal is getting the positive attention. The film will be in select cinemas both here and Stateside on 17 December, ahead of its debut on Netflix on 31 December.
