Every so often, a trailer comes along that sells something you never specifically knew you wanted, and suddenly find you need. In the case of the Queenpins trailer, how about this: a crime comedy set in the world of extreme couponing. As in, the (typically US) practice of racking up major supermarket discounts by stacking up vast amounts of coupons, reducing hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise to mere pennies. In Gita Pullapilly and Aron Gaudet’s film, Kristen Bell’s Connie and her friend JoJo (played by Cruella, Killing Eve and The Good Place star Kirby Howell-Baptiste) hatch a scam involving counterfeit coupons that initially sets them flying high, but soon finds them in the crosshairs of the law. Inspired by a true story, the film also stars the ever-great Paul Walter Hauser (a nice Cruella reunion for him and Howell-Baptiste) and Vince Vaughn as a Loss Prevention Officer and a US Postal Inspector, respectively, trying to bring the pair down – and the trailer also reveals roles for pop star Bebe Rexha and Community’s Joel McHale. Elsewhere the cast includes 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer, Annie Mumolo, and Stephen Root. This one looks to have the slick energy of a great crime movie, plus it has two gifted comedians in the central roles, and comes from the studio behind the brilliant Hustlers. In short, when can we get tickets, discounted or not?
The film currently has a release date of 10 September – though whether that date also applies in the UK remains to be seen. US audiences will also be able to view the film on the Paramount+ streaming service.
